This is a comprehensive self-directed learning package that will give you knowledge and understanding of the unique and innovative role of a doctors' clinical assistant (AKA “Medical Scribe”). You will cover a large amount of interesting content, from medical terminology and abbreviations, to learning the process of writing a standard medical note and use these core skills to complete a comprehensive medical record.

The course is divided into individual Modules. Modules 1-4 are required by all students. The Foundation Course is these core Modules 1-4, plus Modules 14-16. The Complete Course includes all 16 Modules. Sometimes individuals only need a select few, and we can tailor the Modules to suit individual learning needs.

By the end of the Complete Course you will have a solid foundation in the skills and tasks of a medical scribe, and have a good understanding of what it takes to be able to work alongside physicians as they care for patients! Whether you work in an emergency department or alongside a specialist in their medical rooms, you will have learned the role of a clinical assistant and be ready for clinical observation.

This course starts with the basics of medical terminology, abbreviations and foundations of medical word building. You will learn the importance of clear and thorough documentation and the legal reasons for it. As you progress through different body systems, you will gain skills through listening and reading comprehension activities, as well as through practice scribing for doctor-patient interviews. You will have ample opportunity to type out patient notes, collate results and create the documents required for patients, as if you were in the clinical setting. 

The style is a mixed model including:

  • Self-paced learning modules
  • Interactive audio and visual activities 
  • Textbook Activities
  • Written assignments with model answers
  • Case studies
  • Real time mock and patient videos for real-time clinical assistant experience 

A large body of information will be covered to ensure you have the skills and competency to become a doctors clinical assistant. Once you have completed the on-line course, you may be offered a place in the classroom workshop and clinical observational shifts. These are included in the course depending on your upcoming role, and are for experience only.

Pass rate is an average of 80%. Some activities are not marked, but many are - requiring you to get an overall pass rate of 80%.
